Want to learn Norwegian while actually using it every day? At Solbakken Folk High School, just an hour from Oslo, you’ll live, create, and learn together with Norwegian students in a warm and creative community.
Here, you get time and space to grow—through daily conversations, small-group lessons, and plenty of real-life experiences. Classes are adapted to your level and combine grammar, vocabulary, and speaking practice in ways that feel natural and fun.
You won’t just sit in a classroom. We use nature, art, and culture as part of your learning—baking waffles, exploring forests, visiting museums, or watching a play at the National Theatre. You’ll get to see places like Finnskogen, Kongsvinger, Odalstunet, and Oslo, all within easy reach of our school.
At Solbakken, language learning is part of everything you do. You share everyday life with students from theatre, film, and other courses, joining in classes, festivals, and creative projects. It’s a close, international community where you’ll find new friends—and where Norwegian quickly becomes part of your daily life.
This course is for anyone who wants to go beyond textbooks and truly live the language. You’ll learn to listen, speak, and understand Norwegian through experiences that make it stick—whether you’re on stage, in the kitchen, or out in the woods.
Who is the course of study suitable for?
This course is for people who are serious about learning Norwegian—not only in theory, but in practice. You’ll be challenged to speak, listen, and engage in Norwegian every single day, in both academic and everyday settings. Whether you’re starting from scratch or already have some knowledge, we tailor the teaching to meet your level and help you advance.
We believe language is best learned through doing—so we bring it to life. Our excursions include forest hikes, cultural visits, theatre trips, and small adventures in and around Oslo. You’ll learn the names of trees and wild animals in Norwegian, shop in Norwegian, and maybe even dream in Norwegian by the end of the year.
At Solbakken, you live in a close, creative community alongside students from other programs like theatre and film. This means you also get to take part in shared classes, social life, festivals, and activities. It’s a unique opportunity to practice your Norwegian in real conversations every day—and to become part of something much bigger than a language course.
In addition to your Norwegian classes you will also particiapate in joint activities such as:
- Choir – learn to sing Norwegian songs and improve your Norwegian pronunciation.
- Workouts.
- Trips with the rest of the students at school, often one or two overnight trips at the beginning of the school year, theatre trips to Oslo and Kongsvinger.
Our expectations of you
- motivated to show up and learn Norwegian.
- ready to spend a year living in a small Norwegian town.
- willing to participate in a joint community with the other students at school?
Welcome to Solbakken!
